    Clearly, University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins has lost whatever credibility he once had with faculty, staff and most importantly the public. Which leads us to wonder if the Regents are attacking this problem with anywhere near the sense of purpose they exuded at the December meeting, or if they are simply spackling over the rough patches until eyes are diverted elsewhere.

      The Lukeville closure has created an untenable situation that must be dealt with now. If that weren鈥檛 crystal-clear before, the shooting death in an American car on a Sonoran highway this week 鈥 part of one of the detour routes to Rocky Point 鈥 certainly should make it so.聽

        The University of Arizona鈥檚 financial issues are surprising and concerning. But the underlying reasons for them 鈥 and the way the university鈥檚 leadership has chosen to deal with both the perception and the reality, with heedlessness and hubris 鈥 are far more worrisome.

        While there are doubtless many reasons, logistical and strategic, that Davis-Monthan was chosen for this new mission, we believe that the carefully cultivated and long-nurtured relationship between city and base has to be a big factor as well.
